IV Therapy Course
Course Purpose and Objectives
This blended course is a combination of home study, classroom didactic information, skills lab, and competency evaluation. Participants must review all information provided in the course packet, pass the written exam, and attend the classroom/skills portion. The classroom segment will provide the students the ability to review and receive education on Intravenous (IV) Theory, safety, and information related to all aspects of IV administration. The skills lab will allow the student to perform procedures including, but not limited to: preparing the patient, preparing the IV site, choosing the correct fluid, establishing the IV, calculating IV flow rates/drips and administration, trouble shooting, recognizing complications, documentation, and the discontinuation of the IV site.
After completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Explain the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system as it relates to
intravenous therapy.- Describe the principles of fluid and electrolyte balance, osmosis, diffusion, and
homeostasis.- Identify indications, contraindications, and complications associated with intravenous
therapy.- Differentiate types of IV solutions, additives, and their appropriate clinical uses.
- Discuss infection control principles and legal/ethical responsibilities related to IV
therapy administration.- Interpret provider orders accurately for IV fluid administration, medication additives,
and infusion rates.- Recognize signs and symptoms of IV therapy complications (e.g., infiltration, phlebitis,
extravasation, fluid overload, air embolism).
Course Length
The course length is 30 hours we recommend 22 hours of self-study, and the classroom/skills lab is 8 hours. You will receive a self study guide which must be completed prior to your in person session. The in-person class session will involve content review, clarification of questions, math review, lab demonstration of IV skills, and written exam. There is no national certifcation.

Who can take this course?
This course is for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses only. Licensed Practical Nurses must refer to their states Nurse Practice Act in regards to their scope of practice in starting and maintaining IV’s.
How many students are in a class?
Due to the important and intense information being learned we only allow 4 students per clinical lab hands on skill session. Once you sign up for the course you will be given a date for your in-person class session. We want you to be ready and everyone learns at a different pace. We offer a small classroom session so you get the attention you deserve.
